These are the original "gauchos". Not sure why they are called that? Anyway, the 47 year old foam was kind of gross.
I used an electric knife, (the same one used on Thanksgiving turkeys) to cut the new foam.
We are trying to keep her as original as possible. We have a long way to go, but I think that she is looking pretty good.
Putting the ac on the roof of this thing would be a big expensive job. 1963 was the year BEFORE they started wiring the roofs for AC, so not only would we have t cut a hole in her, we would have to re wire and then purchase an 800 dollar ac unit. This handy solution may not be the most elegant, but it is saving us both time and money. The triangle sides continue to inside, holding the unit in place without any screws or connectors.
We finally camped in our Airstream. I had not camped since about 1977, and that was in a tent- so what a treat it was. She is really not completely ready, but you will see by the pictures that she has come a long way.
I have named her Rosie because of her rivets. The kids call her Bertha.

Hey Lori!
ReplyDeleteGreat to find your blog (from your link at the forums). We had a '63 Globe Trotter for a couple years, but it was in SUCH sad shape it couldn't bear to wait any longer before actually using the darn thing.
So about 2 years ago I found an all original '62, and we've been enjoying it ever since. I'd love to plan a little get together (without all that WBCCI nonsense) for us Chicagoans sometime soon.
We live in Evanston and I actually grew up in Crystal Lake. My dad made the drive out from the north shore every day to teach at MCC for over 30 years.
If you'd like to see any of our adventures, they're at my blog:

That link will filter down to just the Airstream related posts, but it seems that as another pair of artists, you and we have more in common than just love of Airstreams. Perhaps we can camp out sometime this fall. Oops... I just remembered you don't have a tow vehicle just yet!
As a matter of fact, another '62 Globe owner that I've befriended online is coming out to visit on Labor Day weekend this year. They'll probably camp in our driveway next to ours, and they should make quite a cute pair. (we determined they were built only about 40 units apart from each other).
Take care, and hope to talk to you soon.
Brad
